A whole new sub culture of coarse fishing has slowly been developing over the past 30 years; it has been building moment and 15 years ago really exploded on to the fishing scene. Carp fishing is now an extremely popular type of fishing - particularly in Europe - and has perhaps the most dedicated and passionate groups of participants of all the fishing genres.

If you have found this hub through some of my other hubs you may be surprised to see that I like fishing, if you’ve got here on the off chance you’ll see that my other hubs are based on what some would consider to be ‘proper’ sports such as running gear and cycling products, but I also enjoy the slower paced more lazy side of life with some occasional fishing trips. Nothing beats a spot of angling on a lovely still summers day.

The dedicated nature of carp anglers and the need for specialist equipment to outwit wisened old carp has been a match made in heaven for fishing equipment manufacturers. Long standing manufacturers such as Diawa and Shimano now have specialist carp divisions and carp ranges and a plethora of dedicated carp fishing tackle companies have been able to start up business to feed the demand. This is a double edged sword for the consumer, on the one hand it has generated competition and means prices of carp tackle is falling, but on the other hand it gives a staggering amount of choice to choose from. Too much choice can be as frustrating and not enough choice and usually involves a lot of time trawling through reviews and magazines for you to be able to decided which kit really is right for you.

To the non fisherman/woman the world of carp fishing may look like a strange sport, even to other members of the angling fraternity carp fishing can look strange. Carp anglers spend insane amounts of time at the waters edge (sometimes weeks) without a single bite and this may seem slightly nutty. The amount of time they spend at their sport requires specialist, durable and functional tackle and accessories. It is the later that there is a vast market for, for the newly created business for carp fishing. As a generalisation the rods, carp reels and line market is well and truly stitched up by the ‘big boys’ that have been producing such kit for years. It would be very difficult for the new kid on the block to break in to this area. The accessory and end tackle market though is wide open and there are numerous new companies producing high quality kit and a plethora of Chinese companies producing not bad quality kit either.

The term of carp fishing tackle this really does apply to the kit that goes in the water and not all of the accessories that go along with specialist angling such as bivvies, fishing chairs and sleeping bags etc. There are many rigs involved in carp fishing and new rigs get tweaked and created every day. There are a number of different rigs used in carp fishing but the main aim of all of them is to present the bait in the most natural way possible so that the carp are not spooked by it. One of the most well known rigs for doing this is the hair rig. In essence the bait is not attached to the hook, it is connected to the hook by a fine thread (or hair – hence the name). This allows the bait to move freely in the water without being affected by the weight of the hook and hence doesn’t cause suspicion to the fish. When the unsuspecting fish comes along and suck up the bait they also suck up the hook, and if luck on your side you bag yourself a nice big carp.

The hair rig is the most popular rig but there are many others - bolt rigs and helicopter rigs are also very popular but really only just scrape the surface as to the possibilities available. You can buy these as ready made bits of tackle but I have always preferred to make my own. Being able to order carp tackle online has really broadened the amount of kit available to me to tie my own rigs. I still prefer to go to my local tackle shop where possible, and I don’t mind paying a little bit more for the service (and to keep our local tackle shops on the high street) but there are some things that they don’t have in stock and in this case I’ll use an online store. Online you will be able to find whatever size weights or leads you want, you can get the most supple hook length materials and can get any size swivels and links that you want.

Tight lines.
